The residents of Butler woke up Saturday morning to the sight of racers barreling down the city streets and whirling around Memorial Park for a 6.5-mile time trial.  Max Korus (Penn State Hershey Cancer) set the fastest time at 14:35 (26.7mph)

The afternoon saw an increase in both action and temperature during the Main St criterium, which featured both a long drag up and down Main St Butler and a loop over some brick roads under the Butler County courthouse.  Before the two-wheelers took off, though, the crowd was treated to the very unique sight of a unicycle crit.

The 4/5 race was lit up by James Thompson who attacked during the first lap and stayed off the front until the finish.

The 1/2/3 race saw Andreas Fliessgarten off the front for the majority of the race.

Max Korus heroically bridged up to Fliessgarten and the two eventually made their way around the course and caught the main field.

Fliessgarten added insult to injury by then winning the bunch sprint.

The Renfrew Ras road race returned Sunday to finish off the weekend of racing.  Early in the morning during the 4/5 race, James Thompson once again solo’d off on the first climb and the chase pack could never organize enough to catch him.

Ray Russell also launched a solo attack in the Master’s race to stay away for the road race win.

Alaina Gurski fought hard to maintain her lead in the Women’s GC and succeeded even after Patricia George (Steel City Endurance) won the sprint from the select women’s field.

The 1/2/3s set off for 10 laps of the 8.5 mile course in the 90-degree sunshine.  Only half would finish.  The front group eventually shrunk to 5 men including Korus, Fliesgarten, Zamastil, and two local favorites on the IRMC squad, Bob Stumpf and Stephen Cummings.

After 3 hours and 59 mintes, Max Korus crossed the finish line first to take the victory in the men’s 1/2/3 road race and the top spot in the general classification.

John Cotter wins the bunch sprint

Barbour DeTour

Lots of Pittsburgh racers drove down for the Barbour DeTour road race in Philippi, WV.  The weather was beautiful albeit a little on the warm side.  The fields did a single loop of the 30-mile rolling terrain course, except for the 1/2/3’s who did 2 laps.  The race started with a 2-mile uphill drag and ended coming down that same road where racers commonly hit above 40mph.

John Cotter (Freddie Fu) successfully defended his lead in the ABRA series standings by winning the bunch sprint and looks to be almost assured of the series title with one more race to go.  Gunnar Shogren (Dynamic Physical Therapy) got his Hilly Billy revenge on Gerry Pflug and Brian Wieczorek by beating the pair in the closing meters to win the men’s 40+ race.

Another exciting Friday Night at the Track tonight.  In sharp contrast to the TTs two weeks ago, the racers were welcomed with sun, clear skies and zero wind.  Before and after the evening’s main 10-mile time trial event, there were several record attempts made by various riders that we would like to highlight.

First up, Eric Milbrandt (UPMC / pictured above) and John Heffner (Iron City Bikes / below) went after the 5-lap record of 5:16.  Both riders smashed the old record with Eric besting John by 3 seconds with a 5:03.

Next up, Eric teamed up with fellow UPMC racers Skip Rogers and Kevan Rutledge to take on the Olympic 3 lap sprint record.  Kevan led the first lap, followed by Skip and Eric finished it off.  The result was almost too close to call but went to the UPMC boys with a 16/100 of a second difference advantage over the previous record.

Perhaps not content with their first team record attempt of the night, the three UPMC racers added Glenn Snyder and went after the 4-man 5-mile record (pictured below).  This time, the time would be taken at the third wheel to cross the line.  The four solidly beat the old record by 20 seconds to record a 10:08.

Another night of excellent performances.  Congrats to all.

It is a bad sign for things to come when the night before a mountain bike race the hosting town rings its tornado warning siren. That is exactly what happened Friday night before the Mohican 100 Saturday. Rain, thunder, lightning, wind, flash floods, washed out trails; none of these canceled the race. Anybody who finished the race (especially the 100 mile race) deserves mention. Times were over 20% longer than in previous years (20% is a lot over 8 hours). 600 people line up in downtown Loudonville, Ohio for the event. Local Steevo Cummings grabbed the $200 city limits preme at the top of the opening climb.

Eric Milbrandt (UPMC) set a 5-mile record

Eric Milbrandt (UPMC) was the first rider to go off. Prior to the race, he had stated his intention to attempt the 5-mile record of 0:10.26. Despite the looming storm clouds, Eric poured on the power and set a new record with a time of 0:10:16. That is an average speed of 29.22 mph. Congrats Eric!

Several other racers challenged the old record as well that night. John Heffner (Iron City Bikes), beat the old record after posting a 0:10:21 and Kevan Rutledge (UPMC) matched it. Is everyone getting faster or is the newly re-paved oval to thank? Regardless, these were all impressive performances.
