Stumpf’s Racing Diary: Collegiate Nationals TTT
Pitt Cycling finished up their nationals races in Wisconsin with the team time trial on Sunday. Bob Stumpf checked in with us again to describe the race and give some concluding thoughts on the whole collegiate nationals experience:
Our TTT started at approximately 11am. We had plenty of sleep time and arrived to the course around 9. After piecing together all the TTT equipment we hurried over to the official’s tent to have our bikes inspected. This was one of the most stressful parts of the race. I’m pretty sure with all the work we did on our bikes Andy, Nik, Samson and I are all qualified to review the UCI legal TT bikes. Anyways, after some minor adjustments we all passed. We put in a warm up and made it to the line with 1.5 minutes to go. Don’t have tons to say about the TTT… we made too many mistakes. We lost a man too early and Andy ran over a nail. I think we went for 13 out of 17. Disappointed.
On a side note…
One of the most exciting parts of our Pitt Collegiate season was racing the TTTs. We usually performed very well (in conference) and it added a sense of camaraderie to the team. We could not have done without the help of some very generous people, so in no order we’d like to thank:
Jared Babik
Barb Grabowski
Stephen Cummings
John Cotter
Jake McCrea
Matt Appleton
Everyone above shared with us their TT gear for extended periods of time. Thanks! No one was required to do anything for us but you did! It’s cool to be apart of a network of Pittsburgh cyclists that want everyone to do well.
My final thought…
If there are any kids reading this or people who have the opportunity to race bikes collegiately… DO IT! It was by far some of the most fun I’ve ever had. The racing is competitive and you’ll meet people who you will remember for the rest of your life. Collegiate Cycling Rocks. Keep it real.
